A medical examiner blamed a 17-year-old track star's death on the use of too much anti-inflammatory muscle cream, the kind used to soothe aching legs after exercise.
Arielle Newman, a cross-country runner at Notre Dame Academy on Staten Island, died after her body absorbed high levels of methyl salicylate, an anti-imflammatory found in sports creams such as Bengay and Icy Hot, the New York City medical examiner said.
The medical examiner's spokeswoman, Ellen Borakove, said the teen used "topical medication to excess."
Our question: If a topical medication used to excess can be fatal, at what level does it become toxic? The FDA does not test the toxicity levels of common ingredients in personal care products. There is very little discussion of how readily topical ingredients enter the bloodstream, or whether there should be warnings about ingredients used topically that have not been tested for internal use. Since 60% of what is applied to the skin ends up in the bloodstream, we need to be as careful about what we use topically as what we ingest.
MSM Safe at Any Dose
The MSM in Novaurora Weekend Warrior Balm is safe for internal use. It has been used safely for over 20 years. The only side effect reported in some users is loose stools or diarrhea at high (internal) doses. Practitioners who recommend MSM to their patients suggest they begin their dosage with 1500 to 3000 mg per day, and increase to as much as 8000 mg per day. There are approximately 9000 mg of MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) in an entire 2-oz bottle of Weekend Warrior Balm. If you applied one whole bottle of Novaurora Weekend Warrior Balm a day to your skin, the amount that entered your blood stream would be well within the recommended tolerances for internal consumption.
We don't recommend you use that much, because a little goes a long way and you'd be wasting it. But feel free to use it as often as you like. Our directions for use:

Novaurora invited to join Boulder Innovation Center
In March 2008 Novaurora, LLC was invited to join the Boulder Innovation Center, a consulting group designed to support the growth of fledgling companies in Boulder and Boulder County. Novaurora's owner, Pam Lambert, has worked with volunteer sponsors and coaches from the area to define and plan for the company's expansion and increased brand recognition.
